A Different Northern Light

ME26-005N

The day had come to an end. Cameras were mostly packed away, everyone had settled in for the night, and I stepped outside for one last look before heading to bed.

The first low clouds of the week had finally arrived. Instead of hiding the moon, they caught its light, filling the sky with soft blues and silvery grays while the reflection stretched across the cove below. For a few quiet minutes, the only sounds were the breeze through the pines and the gentle movement of the water.

Months earlier, I had traveled north hoping to photograph the aurora over Finland. Standing outside our rental house in coastal Maine, I found myself watching a different kind of northern light. There were no dancing ribbons of green across the sky—just moonlight, low clouds, and a stillness that made the moment feel every bit as memorable.

Travel isn’t only about the destinations on the map. Sometimes it’s about noticing when the world changes around you, even after the day’s adventures are over
