North of Expected

Finland & Estonia Jan 2026

This volume follows a January 2026 journey through Finland and Estonia, moving from Helsinki to Lapland and across to Tallinn. What begins with a simple premise—traveling north in the middle of winter—quickly moves beyond expectation.

Initial impressions lean into the obvious: cold, dark, unfamiliar. But over time, those edges begin to shift. Interiors open up. Spaces feel intentional. Patterns emerge. What first feels distant becomes more accessible—not because it changes, but because it’s understood differently.

Built from daily notes taken during the trip and expanded afterward, the work moves between immediate observation and later reflection. Some entries capture moments as they happened. Others step back to add context—history, culture, and the systems shaping each place.

“North of Expected” becomes less about geography and more about perception. It traces the movement from assumption to understanding—where the experience isn’t just about going somewhere new, but learning how to see it.
